Comunicado oficial: The Bentley Property III G.A.P. Open went underway with 25 pairings of Paddle-Tennis players opting to win either the Main Event or at least a place in the two Plate Finals.
The event took place at the Victoria Stadium and at Sandpits Club, over a period of four days, from Monday 28th February till Thursday 3rd March 2011. A prompt and positive reply from Mr. Reagan Lima of G.S.L.A., enabling the use of the Victoria facilities, plus the collaboration and support of Sandpits Club to use their own courts including those for the finals, were the key factors for completion of all matches towards the presentation at the S.L.T.C. clubhouse.
Unfortunately for G.A.P., the organisers could not register the reigning champions pair of Joey & Albert Sheriff, due to the former being away from Gibraltar. Albert did pair up with Spanish national Alex Curras and although their progress in the Main event was quite promising, it all ended up for them versus the Spanish pairing of Casas & Macedo. The first Semi-Final was played on Wednesday with Casas/Macedo losing in two straight sets to Taylor/Aguilera, who managed to qualify for their second Main GAP Final. The other two quarter finals played were Coelho/Coelho getting the better of Bado/Blackshaw, and K.Scortino/J.Olivero who won against J.Enriles/D.Casciaro These resulted with Semi-Final placings K.Scortino & J.Olivero qualifying for a place in the Main Final after beating father & son Coelho/Coelho in straight sets. The Main Final was played at 8.30pm on Thursday 3rd March 2011 at Sandpits Club, between James Taylor & Jerry Aguilera versus Jared Olivero & Karl Scortino. The first set went in favour of Olivero/Scortino who almost claimed the title on the second set, after marginally losing with a tie-break score of 8-6. The third and last set was far too tough to handle with tournament favourites Taylor/Aguilera winning 6-1 to clinch the GAP Open for the second time. The Sports Minister Mr. Edwin Reyes together with Paul Collado(Bentley Property Services) were the distinguished guests and witnesses of such a worthy final. Both Hon. Minister and main sponsor contributed to presenting the trophies to all winners & runners-up of all categories, including that of the Most Improved Player of GAP Mr. Wayne Cruz. A special prize to a special lady was also presented to Sandpits Court Allocator and excellent caterer Audrey, who excelled once again with her hospitality and superb tapas for all Paddle enthusiasts to enjoy. Paul Cartwright thanked all participants and guests, the sports authorities, Sandpits Club and Bentley Property, for all the support given during the event. The president, also expressed his desire for the game of Paddle-Tennis, to develop in Gibraltar as a national sport that we can all be proud of in the not too distant future.
